In Hawaii, inflation is caused by tourism and because of tourism living expenses go up for the residents of Hawaii. Because of the high population of tourism, the Native people are encouraged to leave Hawaii and find better economic conditions. The fact that Hawaii is known for being a very large tourist state they tend to build bigger buildings such as hotels, golf courses, restaurants, and other entertainment which lead to Natives facing challenges in trying to support their families on the island. This shows environmental justice because families are struggling to keep up with housing because of insanely high prices in Hawaii. There is also no room in Hawaii besides a small section for the Natives because many tourist attractions are being built due to the high percentage of tourism. Also the more tourists they receive the more money people will pay, the less amount of space to build things for the Natives, and less food supply. There is also a lot of poor people who live in Hawaii because of how high the living expenses are. A quote that supports my evidence says “The Island of O’ahu, with the major resort of Waikiki, the site of four major tourist destinations, over 800,000 residents, military installations that control 30% of the island and the center of Hawaii business in the capital of Honolulu. Currently, the island, which has an area of only 60,759 miles, is visited by 5 million tourists annually.” (Haunani-Kay, 2000) This explains why climate change is a huge deal in Hawaii, the amount of tourist equals the amount of air that is being polluted. The amount of construction that is being done to make tourist enjoy their time in Hawaii and want to return back is another reason why climate change is an issue. These two reasons are also why inflation is a thing because the cost of construction is a lot and the number of tourists per year is a lot. Hawaii would be very different without tourism. Inflation wouldn’t be a thing because not a lot of tourists would travel which would mean more jobs would be available instead of tourism attractions. Also, climate change would be better since it wouldn’t be overpopulated which means not a lot of carbon dioxide or pollution. The population would go down and the loss of culture wouldn’t really happen which would be respectful towards natives.
